Registration Requirements for the Core Competencies
The following table shows the specific requirements for registration for the core competencies. These requirements will be fully implemented on September 1, 2006. After that date, all applicants for registration must meet the academic requirements listed below. Up to that date, any applicant may opt to meet these requirements, and they must do so if they wish to be eligible for mobility under section 4.2.1 of the Mutual Recognition Agreement for Psychology.

- Effective communication - Establishment and maintenance of rapport - Establishment and maintenance of trust and respect in the professional relationship |
2. Assessment and Evaluation |
Four courses in statistics and research design*** of which at least two must be at the graduate level AND Two graduate courses in assessment |
- Formulation of a referral question - Selection of methods - Information collecting and processing - Psychometric methods - Formulation of hypotheses - Making a diagnosis where appropriate - Report writing - Formulation of an action plan |
3. Intervention |
Two graduate courses in intervention |
- Establishment and maintenance of professional relationships with clients from all populations served - Establishment and maintenance of interdisciplinary relationships - Gathering of information about the nature and severity of the problem - Formulating hypotheses about the factors that are contributing to the problem through qualitative and quantitative means - Selection of appropriate intervention methods - Analysis of information |
4. Research |
Two graduate courses in research design*** AND evidence of research skills by one of the following: - Graduate level thesis/dissertation - Graduate research paper/project/portfolio acceptable to the board - Publication experience acceptable to the board |

5. Ethics and Standards |
One graduate course in psychological ethics |
- Ethical decision-making process - Proactive identification of potential ethical dilemmas - Resolution of ethical dilemmas |
* For registration purposes, a course means a 3 credit course.
** Skills must be demonstrated at the level required for independent practice
*** The same course may count towards the requirements for more than one competency
